Safety Californians can now go online to get details on more than 63,000 registered offenders by visiting http://www.meganslaw.ca.gov. Viewers can search the new website by physical address, city, county, zip code, or individual name. They can also type in the name of a park or school in a community to locate offenders living in the vicinity. Previously, citizens could obtain Megan’s Law information only at a sheriff’s office or a participating police department. The website also notes that most sex offenses are committed by family, friends, or acquaintances of the victim. It provides resources on related topics, such as links for more information on How to Protect Yourself and Your Family, Facts about Sex Offenders, Frequently Asked Questions, and Sex Offender Registration Requirements in California. The Office of the Sheriff Contra Costa County website at http://www.cocosheriff.org/crime_statistics/crime_statistics.htm lists prevention tips, crime alerts, and crime statistics for our area.
