May's Monthly Meeting: Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Common Household Products that Risk Children's Healthy Development & Safer AlternativesCurious about what scientists say are the risks of using the most commonly used herbicides and insecticides used in schools and homes? Want to know what cleaning product alternatives work, are cheaper, and used by those who want to decrease chronic asthma and chemical sensitivities? Then you don't want to miss our May monthly meeting where you can learn ways to protect your family. We often don’t consider lawn chemicals or commonly used ant control pesticides to be of concern, but exposure even at low levels can cause serious health impacts, especially compounded over time. Research studies from major Universities throughout the world, such as UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health, Colombia University, and Keck, at the USC Medical School’s Public Health Department have linked low levels of pesticide exposures in the fetus and children to chronic asthma, childhood leukemia, and developmental damage, among other problems. Fortunately, there are simple ways to protect ourselves and safer alternatives that work. Susan JunFish, MPH, founder and director of Parents for a Safer Environment (PfSE), will be presenting an overview of the risks of toxic pesticides and cleaning products and will give recommendations for safer alternatives. Susan earned her BS and MPH from UC Berkeley and worked as a Cal/EPA hazardous substances scientist. She has given numerous talks to politicians, physicians, at conferences, and to service groups throughout the Bay Area, which have resulted in policy changes to decrease toxic pesticides and cleaning products usage by public agencies. PfSE is an all-volunteer, grass roots organization founded in 2002. Its mission is to encourage the use of safer alternatives to pesticides, which fosters the healthy development of children and helps protect wildlife and the environment. www.pfse.net Please join us! This is one meeting you cannot afford to miss, and Susan promises a good Q & A session on all your environmental health questions. Tuesday, May 13 at St. Mark’s Church, Orinda
