Sneak Peak at the New Lafayette Library 5/3/2008

Come to a Sneak Peak Community Celebration of the fun programs that will be available once our new Lafayette Library & Learning Center opens. Start the day with pancake breakfast and storytime with Miss Donna at 9am to 10am at the current library, then head to Stanley Middle School from 10am to 3pm for sports clinics, walking tours, hands-on science sessions, the zoo- mobile, authors signing books, health tips, figuring out your next "dream career," swashbuckling sword fights, music, food and more. Celebrating Elephants at the Oakland Zoo 5/3/2008

Elephant Barn Tours: Experience a special once-a-year, behind the scenes tour of the elephant barn and learn about Oakland Zoo's progressive elephant management program! Tours are offered throughout the day. A $5 donation is requested per person. Purchase tickets at the Flamingo Plaza and at the Elephant Exhibit. Tours begin at the Elephant Exhibit.

Elephant Information Stations: How big is your foot compared to an elephant? How much does a 9,500 pound elephant eat? Learn the answers to these questions when you visit special elephant information stations.

Visit Camp Amboseli: Stop in and visit Camp Amboseli, a life size elephant research camp replica. Use binoculars and data collection sheets to do your own research. Talk to the camp researchers about life on the savanna.

All proceeds, from the event, go to elephant research and conservation.

Green Rheem Film Night at the Rheem Theater 5/8/2008

In conjunction with other Lamorinda community organizations, we are proud to announce the first "Green Rheem" film night on May 8th, 2008 at Rheem Theater. A $15 ticket includes local wines and appetizers in the lobby starting at 6pm, followed by the movie "Blue Vinyl" at 7pm (97 min long).  Over 50 tickets have already been sold.  If you'd like to attend just reply to this email and let us know how many tickets you'd like.  We hope this will be the first of many green film nights at Rheem!In

AlaVie is going to be hosting a FREE Fitness Day in the Park at Heather Farms on Saturday, May 10, from 9am to12pm. The group will be coaching women's, coed, and children's boot camp programs and featuring services from many of our favorite community partners. This is a great chance for people to jump start their spring/summer fitness routines and learn about health/fitness resources in our community. AlaVie offers its PowerVie Boot Camp program for women at Heather Farms Park in Walnut Creek on an ongoing basis. LMC Monthly Meeting 5/13/2008

All LMC members are invited to attend our monthly meetings, held the second Tuesday of each month* at St. Mark’s Church in Orinda from 7:00-8:45 p.m.

Topics are of interest to local parents and range from the relatively serious and practical (family financial planning, preschool selection, children’s health) to downright fun (planning memorable birthday parties, fitness for moms). Over the years, we’ve had dozens of excellent speakers, lively panel discussions, and demonstrations.

Come to socialize and enjoy complimentary meeting refreshments! Social time is from 7:00-7:30 p.m. We hope to see you at our next meeting!

Walk,Bike, Bus to School Day in Orinda 5/16/2008

Orinda will be celebrating Walk/Bike/Bus to School and Work Day on Friday, May 16th. This event promotes walking and biking for several reasons including:

  • Physical Fitness
  • Teaching safe walking and biking skills to children
  • Concern for the environment
  • Reducing traffic congestion, pollution and excessive speed
  • Sharing time for community members, parents and children
This event is being sponsored by the City of Orinda and the Traffic Safety Advisory Committee in support of similar national programs and to increase awareness for improving pedestrian and bicycle pathways in our community.

"Animals on Broadway" Event at Broadway Plaza 5/18/2008
